Bomb disposal squads combing areas
around gutted army depot

Bomb disposal squads were combing the areas around the army ammunition depot near Suratgarh in Rajasthan, which was gutted in a devastating fire on Thursday, to detect and defuse live ammunition, officials in Jaipur said on Saturday.

Eight bomb disposal squads were pressed into service to detect and defuse live ammunition lying in fields, they said.

Meanwhile, situation in the affected areas was now normal and most of the residents of about six villages, who were evacuated to safer places, have returned to their homes, an official spokesman said.

The road and rail traffic, which were stopped as debris was flung around the depot due to the exploding ammunition, have been restored, he said.

The Rajasthan government announced financial assistance to the people whose houses were damaged due to the fire.

It would provide Rs 10,000 for each house damaged due to debris flung from the depot, he said.

The administration had completed a survey of the damage to civilian property, Deputy Inspector General of Police (Bikaner Range) Laxman Meena told PTI on phone.

Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Friday night directed the authorities to provide financial relief to affected villagers, he said, adding the rehabilitation grant would be given to the owners of both kutcha and pucca houses.
