General strike hits life in Kashmir

Normal life in Srinagar and other major towns in the Valley came to a standstill on Monday following a general strike called by the Hurriyat Conference to commemorate the 11th death anniversary of Mirwaiz Moulvi Farooq.

Shops and business establishments remained closed in response to the strike call, which badly affected work in government offices too, sources said.

Banks, courts, educational institutions and other establishments also remained closed.

Police and paramilitary forces were deployed in full strength in sensitive areas of the town.

Groups of residents chanting pro-freedom slogans visited the Martyrs' Graveyard at Idgah in downtown Srinagar to pay homage to Moulvi Farooq and others who were killed at Hawal on this day eleven years back.

Mirwaiz Moulvi Omar Farooq, former Hurriyat chairman and son of Mirwaiz Moulvi Farooq, also led a procession to offer prayers at the graveyard.
