ULFA issues a warning
to the new government

The United Liberation Front of Asom has cautioned the new Congress government against repeating the mistakes of its last stint in power.

The outlawed militant group has indicated that it would not adopt a soft approach towards the new government. ''The people of Assam have nothing to cheer about the swearing in of the Congress government. It is old wine in a new bottle,'' ULFA said in the latest issue of its mouthpiece Freedom.

The weekly publication is now available on the Internet.

"Nobody has forgotten the brutal Congress regime of the late Hiteswar Saikia. Nevertheless, people still hope that the Congress will read the writing on the wall and will not repeat its past history of betrayal and fratricide,'' the lead article in Freedom said.

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi is reportedly toying with the idea of cease-fire and a greater role for the police in the unified command structure.

The ULFA, fighting for a 'sovereign, socialist Assam', has described the outgoing Asom Gana Parishad government as a ''bunch of traitors.''

Meanwhile, the Manab Adhikar Sangram Samiti, a human rights group, has urged the new government to take measures to stop ''secret killings'' allegedly encouraged by the previous government.
