US has a role to encourage peaceful
solution to Kashmir: Powell

"The progress we have seen over the last several years between the US and India gives us a new opportunity to encourage the sides (India and Pakistan) to find a peaceful and just solution to the problem of Kashmir," Powell told Senator Johnson when asked about the role the US could play on the resolution of Kashmir issue.

"I think we do have a helpful role to play because of the new relationship we have with India. But it is a very difficult issue. We plan to build on the relationship," Powell said.

He said the US will try to impress on India and Pakistan the seriousness with which it views the potential for 'something getting out of control' of the two nuclear states.

"We really have to make sure that this nuclear genie does not get any further out of the bottle than it already has," he said.

Powell said the dynamics of the whole relationship has changed.

"In the past, India was close to the Soviet Union and the US had close ties with Pakistan while now our focus is on both countries and I think we can be helpful to both."
