The Crime Investigation Department finally made some headway in the child adoption racket by picking up Sarita, a close associate of main accused Anita Sen, on Tuesday evening.
Sarita was taken into custody soon after her husband called up the CID and disclosed her whereabouts. Sarita, for whose whereabouts police offered a Rs 500,000 reward, was undergoing treatment in a private super-speciality hospital in Somajiguda in Hyderabad. She is being produced before the metropolitan magistrate on Wednesday.
She was admitted to the hospital on May 14 for treatment of high blood pressure and diabetes. Following a tip-off by her husband on Tuesday evening, CID officials led by Superintendent of Police N Hanumantha Rao rushed to the hospital and questioned her for about two hours. The CID also sought clues on the whereabouts of Sen, the wife of Additional Director-General of Police Swaranjit Sen.
Both Sen and Sarita were absconding ever since the Child Welfare Department officers raided their adoption home "Precious Moments" at Miyapur on the outskirts of the city on April 26 and rescued 61 infants. Later, the police registered a case against them for running the adoption home illegally and indulging in inter-country adoptions of children through recognised agencies.
Sen, who also carries a Rs 500,000 reward, is still absconding and her anticipatory bail plea was rejected by the metropolitan sessions judge, Hyderabad, and her appeal would come up in the Andhra Pradesh High Court on June 4. Her husband and two sons Monty and Stephen have been summoned to appear before the CID probe team on Wednesday, failing which they have been warned of legal action.
