A Delhi court has issued a non-bailable warrant against Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front chief Yaseen Malik.
Malik's advocate R M Tufail told rediff.com, "The warrant was issued by Additional Sessions Judge V K Jain a few days ago."
Malik was released on bail in a Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act case in 1996. The judge, while then accepting his plea on health grounds, had placed the condition that he would not leave the country without the court's permission.
"Malik is now in the United States, undergoing medical treatment. When he was released on bail, he had no passport. It was given to him only in October last year," his advocate argued.
The court issued the warrant on the last date of hearing of the case, when Malik failed to appear before it. The court took strong exception to Malik's absence and leaving the country without informing it.
"Malik is returning to India shortly and will appear before the court at the next hearing in July," Tufail added.
Malik was one of the JKLF's four area commanders. Hammid Sheikh was killed by the security forces in 1992, while Asfaq Majeed Wani was killed in 1990. The other area commanders, who floated a political organisation after abandoning violence, are Javed Mir and Malik.
Malik and his colleagues crossed the India-Pakistan border in 1987 and returned to the Kashmir valley in 1988. He was arrested under TADA in 1990 and remained in custody till he was released on bail in 1996.
