VHP chief Ashok Singhal hospitalised

Vishwa Hindu Parishad international working president Ashok Singhal suffered a massive heart attack on Tuesday and was admitted to a private hospital in Coimbatore.

His condition was now stable but he will be under close observation for another 48 hours, Dr G Bhaktavatsalam, chairman of K G Hospital, said.

Singhal was given Thrombolysis and other blood-clot dissolving measures by a panel of heart specialists, he said.

The VHP leader had suffered a heart attack in 1992 too while on a visit to Holland.

On Monday evening, Singhal was hospitalised when two curry leaves stuck in his throat while consuming buttermilk. He was discharged the same night after doctors removed the leaves.

Doctors from a private hospital were summoned to the pharmacy Tuesday when Singhal complained of chest pain at 5.45 am and he was shifted to the hospital around 6.45 am, police said.

Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Union Home Minister L K Advani telephoned the hospital and enquired about Singhal's condition, hospital sources said.

Tight security arrangements have been made in and around the hospital, police said.
