A new political party has decided to filed a eunuch against Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Rajnath Singh, who is seeking entry to the state legislature through byelections early next month.
Encouraged by the recent victory of two eunuchs - to the position of mayor of Gorakhpur city in eastern Uttar Pradesh and to an assembly seat in Madhya Pradesh - Samajwadi Janata Dal chief Parmanand Yadav has propped up Dil Bahar, a eunuch from eastern UP's Ghazipur district to give Singh a run for his money.
"The time has come for bringing change in a badly corrupt system; and this could not be portrayed better than by fielding a eunuch," Yadav told mediapersons at the Barabanki district headquarters of Haidergarh assembly constituency.
The seat had been recently vacated by Congress legislator Surendra Nath Awasthi, who had taken his party leadership by surprise when he offered his seat to Singh last month.
Yadav claimed that Dil Bahar would have eunuchs campaigning for him from different parts of the state, as well as neighbouring Madhya Pradesh.
Dil Bahar told newsmen, "At least 300 eunuchs will converge here from March 22, when we propose to take out a large procession in Haidergarh assembly constituency."
Bahar went on to add, "They will subsequently camp here to assist me in my election campaign."
On plans for an extremely backward Haidergarh, that had remained virtually undeveloped despite being barely 45 km from the state headquarters, Bahar said, "My needs are few so there is total fulfilment in life; so if people elect me, they will find a fully devoted and committed person to look after their needs."
The Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party had put up rather "weak candidates" against the chief minister.
