NDA allies offer to back RJD rebels

Buoyed by the Rashtriya Janata Dal dissidents' boycott of Sunday's 'gaon bachao besh bachao' [save the villages, save the country] rally of party chief Laloo Prasad Yadav, the opposition National Democratic Alliance has thrown a bait to the rebels, offering them unconditional support in their bid to overthrow the state government.

The Bharatiya Janata Party and Samata Party have promised unconditional support to RJD working president Ranjan Prasad Yadav, who is leading the rebels, in forming an alternative government in the event of a split in the ruling party.

The BJP will not form its own government, but will extend support from outside to the dissidents in their bid to topple the Rabri Devi government, state BJP president Nand Kishore Yadav told the Press Trust of India in Patna on Monday.

Predicting the imminent fall of the Rabri Devi government, he said the process of change in the RJD leadership had already been set in motion with the dissidents staying away from the rally.

The humiliating defeat of the RJD candidate in the by-election to the Asthawan assembly seat has not gone unnoticed by RJD members of Parliament and the state legislature, he said. They had seen the writing on the wall and wanted to jettison Laloo Prasad Yadav and his wife Rabri Devi, he claimed.
