Former NC legislator's house attacked; 6 gunned down in J & K

Militants attacked the house of a former National Conference legislator and gunned down six people, including a woman and her two-and-a-half-year-old child, while two Lashkar-e-Tayiba militants were killed in an encounter with security forces in Jammu and Kashmir since Thursday night.

Security forces apprehended four militants, one of them a foreign mercenary who was assigned the task of blowing up railway tracks by Pakistan's ISI, and recovered 10 kgs of RDX and three improvised explosive devices in the state during the period, an official spokesman said.

Militants fired at the house of former National Conference MLC Ghulam Ahmad Beig at Kraliwat in Baramulla Thursday night, he said, adding police personnel posted there returned the fire but none was injured in the shootout.

Militants took away a self-loading rifle of a policeman before fleeing. Beig was present in the house at the time of the attack.

The spokesman said two Lashkar ultras were killed in a fierce gunbattle with security forces at Phagla in Poonch district in Jammu region.

In the same district, militants barged into the house of one Kulsoom Fatima in Mendhar sector Thursday night and killed the woman and her two-and-a-half-year-old child, the spokesman said.

The spokesman said body of a National Conference activist was found at Athwathoo in Baramulla district, adding he was abducted by militants who slit his throat with a sharp-edged weapon.

Another ruling NC worker was killed by militants at his house at Dangerpora-Kalaroos in frontier district of Kupwara.

Two more people were killed by ultras at Gambir Mughlan in Rajouri district, the spokesman said, adding one of them was an employee of public health engineering department.

Four people were wounded in a grenade attack near Kupwara bus stand.

Police arrested a foreign mercenary associated with Islamic Front at R S Pura sector in Jammu region. Two IEDs besides arms and ammunition were seized from him.

The spokesman said he was assigned the task of causing blasts on railway tracks by ISI.

Three more ultras were nabbed in Jammu region and 10 kgs of RDX and eight grenades were recovered from them.
