India, Turkey sign security protocol

India and Turkey signed a police and security cooperation protocol on Friday seeking ways to fight organised crime, drug smuggling and international terrorism.

Home Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani and Turkish Interior Minister Rustu Kazim Yucelen signed the agreement, which also provides for joint efforts to combat arms smuggling, counterfeiting of currencies, money laundering and illegal migration.

Noting that terrorism posed a threat not just to one country but to the entire humanity, the two leaders expressed support to democratic and secular states.

Advani also suggested setting up of a Joint Working Group to combat terrorism.

India already has similar JWGs with the United States, Britain, Canada and Israel. They also decided to establish systems of mutual exchange and coordination between the concerned agencies.
