Sattar warns US against
continuing sanctions

Pakistan Foreign Minister Abdul Sattar on Wednesday issued a thinly disguised warning to the US that if it did not lift economic and military sanctions against Islamabad, the latter would increase its reliance on nuclear weapons.

"The United States has no legal obligation to provide economic assistance or sell military equipment to Pakistan. But friends have the right at least to expect non-discrimination. The sanctions deny Pakistan not merely economic assistance and military sales but even spare parts for the equipment we purchased," Sattar said in an address at the Carnegie International Non-proliferation Conference.

Sanctions were paradoxical in another significant way, Sattar said adding that denial of economic cooperation retards our efforts to relieve poverty, which breeds hopelessness and desperation, and fosters extremism that needs to be opposed.
