Anti-ceasefire agitation intensifies in Manipur

Troops staged flag-march in different parts of Manipur on Wednesday as the anti-ceasefire agitation intensified across the state with thousands of people taking out processions defying curfew.

Official sources said about 3,000 protestors, mostly women, gathered at Phoudel in Thoubal district and marched in a procession defying prohibitory orders on Wednesday morning.

As the situation became tense, the district administration decided to reduce the 13-hour daily relaxation of curfew to four hours on Thursday, the sources said, adding the security had been tightened in the district.

About 30 youths defied indefinite curfew at Elang Leikai area and set ablaze effigies of Central leaders before shaving their heads to show respect to those killed on June 18 last. They later dispersed, the sources said.

The indefinite curfew in Imphal West and East districts would be relaxed for eight hours on Thursday from 5 am to enable people to buy essential items and attend offices during the relaxation period.
