The Punjab and Haryana high court on Wednesday dismissed as 'withdrawn' the fresh anticipatory bail application of Sikh separatist leader Jagjit Singh Chohan.
Disposing of the petition as 'withdrawn', Justice Nirmal Singh took strong exception to the affidavit filed by the separatist leader's counsel Ranjan Lakhanpal saying an affidavit signed by Lakhanpal on behalf of Chohan could not be entertained.
"Such practice is not appreciated by the court," Justice Singh said in his verbal order after hour-long arguments spread over two sessions.
Jagjit Singh Chohan had arrived in India in the early hours of Wednesday.
He had filed a plea for anticipatory bail in the Punjab and Haryana High Court fearing arrest.
Chohan, who returned after three years of court battle over permission to visit his native state, is the second Sikh separatist leader after Khalistan Commando Force chief Wassan Singh Zaffarwal to come back home.
His passport was revoked on April 24, 1981 after he announced establishment of the so-called 'Republic of Khalistan'.
The separatist leader, through his counsel, claimed that he had never given up Indian citizenship. In 1999, he had tried to enter India but was deported back to London from the Delhi airport.
