43 hurt in blast at Jammu station

Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar

A powerful bomb rocked the railway station at Jammu late on Monday evening, injuring 43 civilian bystanders.

Police sources said the injured included pilgrims bound for the Vaishnodevi temple.

They were rushed to the Government Medical College Hospital, where the condition of seven was stated to be critical.

The sources said the bomb exploded when passengers were busy entering the station as most of the trains from Jammu leave late at night.

They said several parked vehicles were damaged in the explosion.

Senior police officers rushed to the spot and security forces cordoned off the area.

No one has yet owned responsibility for the explosion.

Security in Jammu has already been increased in view of the annual pilgrimage to Amarnath, which is scheduled to begin next month.
