"India has always desired to establish a relationship of peace, friendship and cooperation with Pakistan," the President said in his message, the first by an Indian leader after Musharraf took over as president on Wednesday.
"It is our hope that your visit to India next month as President of Pakistan will move India-Pakistan relations in positive and constructive directions," Narayanan said.
"I extend my best wishes on your assumption of office of President of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan," the message said.
"Please accept, Excellency, the assurances of my highest consideration," the President said.
The government had been cautious in its reaction when it said on Thursday that it had to do business with the government of the day in Pakistan.
On Wednesday, the government spokesperson had said that it was watching the situation and would follow protocol that befits a head of state when Musharraf comes to India.
