Russia disapproves of Musharraf
taking over Pak presidency

Russia on Thursday virtually disapproved of Gen Pervez Musharraf taking over as president of Pakistan and said that restoration of constitutional and democratic norms would be 'best' for the country.

"Moscow continues to believe that the restoration of constitutional and democratic norms and free and fair elections in the country would be the best scenario for the development of Pakistan," Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Yakovenko said.

Interfax quoted Yakovenko as expressing concern at the way the head of the State was changed in Pakistan and the legislature finally dissolved.

Welcoming the forthcoming Indo-Pak summit beginning July 14, the spokesman said, "Moscow has taken note of India's readiness to hold the summit despite the latest changes in Islamabad."

"We believe in the need of such a summit. It could contribute in easing the tension and producing an atmosphere of trust between the two key nations of South Asia," Yakovenko said.
