Taleban presenting harsh
picture of Islam: Iran

Ashok Tuteja in Dubai

In an apparent reference to the recent dress code announced for minority Hindus in Afghanistan, Iran has denounced the Taleban regime for presenting a "harsh picture of Islam".

"The picture of Islam which the Taleban has presented is not acceptable to Muslims as it led to the bad reputation of Muslims around the world," said Iranian Foreign Minister Kamal Kharrazi.

The Taleban had recently ordered Hindus in the country to wear a yellow cloth as an identification tag. The move came in for condemnation all over the world.

Kharrazi said a "broad-based" government in Afghanistan, acceptable to all ethnic groups, was the only solution for "long-lasting peace".

The minister said, "If all ethnic Afghan groups reach a consensus to co-operate with a particular government in the country, we would not interfere in the internal affairs of Afghanistan."

The minister said the Taleban was not accepted by other ethnic minorities

Iran does not recognise the Taleban as the legitimate government of neighbouring Afghanistan. The Taleban is recognised only by Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
