HC stays proceedings in I-T case
against Sasikala for a week

The Madras High Court on Friday stayed for a week proceedings again Sasikala Natarajan, a close friend of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalitha, in an economic offences (EO) court relating to non-furnishing of income tax returns for the year 1990-91.

Granting the interim stay on a petition filed by Sasikala seeking to set aside the May 30 order of the EO court permitting the income tax (IT) department to insert additional documents in the case, Justice Malai Subramanian issued notice to the department and posted the petition for hearing on June 22.

Sasikala contended that over 31 fresh documents, not filed along with the original complaint, had been marked by the prosecution and inserted in the complaint.

Stating that at every stage the income tax department sought to insert fresh documents, she contended it was not in accordance with the law.

She had also sought a stay of all proceedings in the case pending disposal of her petition.

The department had filed the complaint against Sasikala for 'willful' failure to file tax returns for the accounting year 1990-91.
