Suspect in Brahm Dutt Dwivedi's murder held

Basharat Peer in New Delhi

Four years after former Uttar Pradesh power minister and senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Brahm Dutt Dviwedi was shot dead in Farukhabad, the Delhi police has apprehended the man who allegedly committed the sensational murder: Rajpal Nai.

Nai, a gangster from western Uttar Pradesh on whom there was a reward of Rs 10,000, was arrested from the yard of New Delhi railway station (NDLS) on Wednesday.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (crime and railways) Mukund Upadhye said the NDLS police station got a tip-off about the gangster's movements in Delhi. Following up on that information, a team headed by the NDLS station house officer, Inspector Sahdev Singh, sighted Nai at the yard.

When the police challenged Nai, he allegedly fired at them with a revolver. But none was hurt and Nai was arrested and disarmed, Upadhye added. The police recovered three live cartridges and one .42 bore Pakistan-made revolver from the gangster.

Nai is also accused of attempting to murder Atul Agarwal, cousin of Amit Agarwal, a BJP legislator in Uttar Pradesh. He was wanted for 11 murders and numerous other cases of attempted murder and extortion.

He shot to infamy in 1996 when he shot dead a notorious criminal named Brijbeer Ramala in the premises of the Meerut court in daylight. In 1997 he killed another criminal, Inderpal Dhaka, in front of the office of the deputy inspector general of police, Meerut, also in daylight.

He is also accused of having abducted and killed five brothers of a rival gangster, Jatin Sirohi.

The Delhi police have registered cases against Nai under the Arms Act and the Indian Penal Code.
