Monsoon session to begin on July 23

Tara Shankar Sahay in New Delhi

The monsoon session of Parliament will begin on Monday, July 23, and end on Friday, August 31, according to Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pramod Mahajan.

Briefing reporters on Thursday after a thirty-minute meeting of the Union Cabinet chaired by Home Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani, Mahajan said the session would last 40 days with 29 sittings out of which six days would be devoted to private members' bills.

He pointed out that ordinarily the monsoon session of Parliament lasts just 20 or 22 days. But the government had assured members during the budget session of Parliament that the session this time would be extended.

Mahajan said 28 bills are pending in the Lok Sabha and 48 in the Rajya Sabha. Besides, three ordinances also have to be converted into laws during the monsoon session.

Those who attended the Cabinet meeting included Commerce Minister Murasoli Maran (DMK), Chemicals and Fertilisers Minister Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa (Akali Dal), Urban Development Minister Jagmohan and Law and Justice Minister Arun Jaitley (both BJP). Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission Krishen Chandra Pant was also present.
