Heavy rains in the last 48 hours, caused by a depression over the Bay of Bengal, have triggered fears of flash floods in Orissa.
"Some of the rivers in state are flowing close to the danger level and more rains are expected in the next 24 hours," sources in the state revenue department said.
Officials of the Central Water Commission, who are constantly monitoring water level in rivers, said no river in the state had yet touched the danger mark, but the next 48 hours would be crucial.
With the south-west monsoon active over the state and more rains expected, water level may rise in all rivers, including Bansadhar and Rushikulya.
The Met office in Bhubaneswar has already warned that heavy rainfall is likely to occur at a few places in the next 48 hours.
The officer on special duty at the state revenue control room, Durgesh Nandini Sahoo, told rediff.com that as of now there were no reports of flooding from anywhere in the state. "The situation is serious Sahoo," he said
