Ambassador to Pak arrives in Delhi

Josy Joseph in New Delhi

Indian High Commissioner to Pakistan Vijay K Nambiar arrived in New Delhi Wednesday night to hold consultations on the visit of Pakistan Chief Executive Pervez Musharraf. He is meeting with several senior functionaries who are involved in the upcoming Vajpayee-Musharraf conclave.

"He is in New Delhi for consultations," a ministry of external affairs spokesperson said Thursday evening.

Nambiar is "having consultations with ministry officials and other senior government functionaries." she said.

He is also expected to take part in discussions to finalise the dates for Musharraf's visit. The dates are "being discussed through diplomatic channels," the spokesperson said. However, she denied reports that an advance party from Pakistan would be visiting New Delhi to prepare for the talks.

Nambiar would brief the government about the situation in Pakistan, the public mood, and the perception of the ruling establishment about the coming summit.

Nambiar's visit comes at a time when Musharraf begins consultations back home with political leaders and religious heads about his proposed visit to Delhi.

Nambiar, who was earlier India's ambassador to China, met the chief executive on January 15 in the first senior level contact after the Kargil conflict. The meeting was described by Nambiar then as a courtesy call, however the discussions had centered around attempts to find common ground to further negotiations which were stalled in the wake of Kargil.
