Bomb defused near J&K secretariat

A major tragedy was averted Thursday with the timely detection of an explosive-laden autorickshaw in the vicinity of the civil secretariat in Srinagar.

The three-wheeler, containing two improvised explosive devices, weighing one kg each, was detected by personnel of the Special Operations Group near the Neelam cinema hall, barely 100 yards from the civil secretariat, a police spokesman said, adding the bomb disposal squad defused the devices.

The civil secretariat as well as the cinema hall are guarded round-the-clock by a large number of police and paramilitary troops. The cinema hall reopened two years back despite a ban imposed by various militant outfits.

Official sources said it was the first bid by militants to target the secretariat.
