Hurriyat extends meeting

The Hurriyat Conference, which met on Wednesday for a crucial discussion on the political situation in the light of the proposed Indo-Pakistan summit, failed to reach any conclusion after a six-hour deliberation, which was extended till late night.

The Hurriyat was to brief the media at 16OO hours on deliberations of its executive committee, but no senior executive member came out of the meeting to meet waiting mediapersons till 1730 hours.

A Hurriyat spokesman later apologised to the mediapersons, saying, "We have nothing for the press. Please don't wait as the meeting has been extended and may continue till late night."

Mirwaiz Umer Farooq, senior executive member, who left the meeting at around 1700 hours refused to answer queries of reporters.

Abdul Ghani Lone, when approached by reporters outside the meeting hall, said, "Sorry, nothing for the press yet. Meeting is continuing."

Sources said the meeting had been extended following differences among members over certain issues.

Before commencement of the meeting, Hurriyat chairman Prof Abdul Gani Bhat said recent developments, particularly the proposed summit between Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Pakistani military ruler General Pervez Musharraf and its implications top the agenda of the meeting.

Bhat said the Hurriyat had not stopped or suspended political activities but only deferred agitational programmes and strike calls.
