Water riots in Karachi

Police fired in the air as violence rocked the southern Pakistan port city of Karachi on Tuesday.

Hundreds of activists of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement and Jeay Sindh Qaumi Mahaz burnt vehicles and attacked public buildings during an agitation to protest severe water shortage in the southern Sindh province.

Reports quoting eyewitnesses said two people were killed and several injured during the violence.

At least six vehicles were set on fire in different parts of the city in the wake of the MQM and JSQM strike, reports from Karachi said.

Police fired into the air at few places to stop the protestors from attacking more vehicles and buildings.

Security has been tightened in the city with the administration rushing in more para-military forces and police have taken into custody over 250 cadres of both parties.

The two parties have been protesting against the water shortage as the Sindh province has been hit by a severe drought.
