Qureshi's fate to be decided soon

The fate of Hashim Qureshi, prime accused in the hijacking case of the Indian Airlines aircraft in 1971 from Srinagar to Lahore, is expected to be decided soon, as the final hearing of his case comes up before the chief sessions judge on Wednesday.

Qureshi, co-founder of the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front along with Amanullah Khan, has been lodged at the joint interrogation centre at Srinagar for five months.

His case is being heard by chief sessions judge Kirmani.

Qureshi was flown to New Delhi recently for a medical check-up at the All-India Institute of Medical Science after he complained of chest pain.

He surrendered in December last, when he flew from Netherlands, where he spent about 12 years, after fleeing from Pakistan.

Qureshi is a strong supporter of dialogue between India and Pakistan and has welcomed Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's peace initiative in Jammu and Kashmir.

He has stated recently, on his way to Srinagar, that the gun was no solution to the resolution of the Kashmir issue. He has also asked Pakistan to stop its material support to the militant groups.
