Vajpayee walks after surgery

Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee Monday walked for the first time after the successful right knee transplant.

A government spokesperson said that Vajpayee walked a few steps with the help of a walker in the corridor of the Breach Candy hospital where he underwent the surgery on June 7.

Doctors are satisfied with Vajpayee's progress, the spokesperson added. The prime minister earlier Monday sat on a chair for a while after being put through physiotherapy exercises. He scanned through some important files as well.

The prime minister showed substantial improvement and has resumed a normal diet.

He has been receiving visitors at the hospital and has shot off congratulatory letters to British premier Tony Blair and Iranian President Mohammed Khatami on their re-election, besides the Indian tennis duo of Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi on their winning the French Open men's doubles title.

Vajpayee has also been closely monitoring national and international events through newspapers and television has also written to ailing Pakistani ghazal maestro Mehdi Hasan wishing him speedy recovery and hailing his music for its power to strengthen the bonds between Indian and Pakistani people.

New York-based surgeon Dr Chittaranjan Ranawat and his team of doctors are periodically examining Vajpayee.
