Pirates kidnap seven fishermen

Seven fishermen were kidnapped, by pirates for ransom, from the Thakurani river in South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, early Saturday morning, police said.

Demanding Rs one lakh for the release of the fishermen, the pirates have threatened to remove and sell the kidneys of the hostages, if the sum was not paid to them by Tuesday, police said.

Six pirates, armed with rifles, came in a launch and picked up seven men from seven fishing boats, before sailing away, they said.

The pirates have demanded that the sum be handed over to a contact at Dockghat in Canning town on Tuesday, with a warning that failure would result in the hostages losing their kidneys.

The other fishermen, who were unharmed, lodged a complaint at the Kultali police station, they said.

Meanwhile, police team in launches were searching the riverine area for the pirates and hostages.

The forces of the Sunderbans Tiger reserve have also joined the search in their launches, the sources said.
