A top commander of the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Tayiba was among twelve militants killed in Jammu and Kashmir since Wednesday, even as militants attacked two police stations and a security picket with grenades injuring five persons, including policemen, official sources said Thursday.
Border Security Force troops shot dead a top Lashkar commander, Abu Abdullah alias Asif, in an encounter at Soura on the outskirts of Srinagar late Wednesday night, they said adding in the grenade attacks by militants in the valley, four policemen and a civilian were injured.
In another encounter between security forces and a group of intruders in Mandi tehsil of Poonch district, one ultra was killed, they said. Two Harkat-ul-Mujaheedin ultras were killed when the army and BSF troops foiled an infiltration bid.
Two rucksacks were recovered from the slain militants which contained one AK-56 rifle, three hand grenades, two rifle grenades, radio sets and Indian and Pakistani currency.
Three militants were killed near Bagla village in Rajouri district Wednesday evening. Two of them were identified as Malik Nadim of Sialkot in Pakistan and Hafiz Jabul Ismail of Pakistan occupied Kashmir. Both belonged to Hizbul Mujaheedeen, they said.
A Lashkar militant was shot dead by security forces on the outskirts of Rajouri town and another gunned down in Surankote tehsil of Poonch district Wednesday evening, they said.
BSF troops also shot dead two militants who were laying Improvised Explosive Devices on a road at Lani in Udhampur district.
The slain militants were identified as Mohammad Sharief and Mohammad Waqar of the Hizbul Mujaheedeen. Waqar was responsible for many IED blasts in the area, the sources said.
A report from Udhampur district said four jawans of the Special Task Force of police were injured in an encounter with militants at a village in Mahore tehsil Thursday.
Meanwhile, the day-long encounter between militants and BSF at Noorbagh locality of Sopore in north Kashmir ended Wednesday night in which one militant was killed and four jawans and two civilians were injured.
Four policemen and a civilian were injured when militants attacked a police station in Shaheedgunj in downtown Srinagar with a grenade Wednesday night.
