Suspected Bodo militants have shot dead at least 10 woodcutters in lower Assam's Kokrajhar district, police said on Tuesday.
About 25 woodcutters had gone to the remote Lungsung reserve forest, under the Runikhata outpost in the district, when National Democratic Front of Bodoland ultras opened fire on them, killing 10 on the spot on Sunday, police said, quoting a delayed report reaching Guwahati on Tuesday morning.
The survivors of the massacre reported the incident to the police on Monday, as they could reach the district headquarters, Kokrajhar, only after trudging by foot for 24 hours.
The NDFB militants, who imposed a ban on wood-felling in the Bodo-dominated areas, attacked the woodcutters from a relief camp set up for victims of the 1996 ethnic violence.
