Breach Candy is ready for PM again

Syed Firdaus Ashraf in Bombay

Breach Candy hospital in south Bombay is ready for Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's right-knee operation scheduled for June 7.

"The arrangements are the same as they were last time," said Cyrus Engineer, General Manager (planning and marketing), at Breach Candy hospital.

The prime minister is expected to reach Bombay on the afternoon of June 6.

Officers of the Special Protection Group have already conducted a series of security drills at the hospital. However, this time the security is tighter compared to the last time when Vajpayee's left knee was operated upon.

"We can feel it... the security is tighter this time," said a member of hospital staff.

Dr Chittranjan Ranawat is arriving in Bombay on Tuesday morning and will operate upon a patient on Wednesday before attending to the prime minister's knee the next day.

He will be assisted by Dr Farooque Udwadia and Dr Nandu Laud. Dr Udwadia and Dr Laud were in charge of the prime minister's post-operation care when his left knee was operated upon in October last year.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pramod Mahajan, like last time, will be in charge of overall arrangements at the hospital.

Mahajan had camped at the hospital through the prime minister's 12-day stay in Bombay last time. And though he had requested the prime minister's well-wishers to avoid calling on him at the hospital, a week after the operation almost every important Cabinet minister turned up to see Vajpayee. The list included Home Minister L K Advani, Union Human Resources Development Minister Murli Manohar Joshi, External Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh and Union Communications Minister Ram Vilas Paswan.
