Manipur brought under President's Rule

Manipur was brought under President's Rule on Saturday night, ending a fortnight-long political crisis in the north-eastern state.

The state assembly has been kept under suspended animation, an official communique said adding the measure would have to be approved by Parliament within two months.

The Union Cabinet, which met in Delhi Saturday evening to review the situation, recommended to President K R Narayanan the imposition of central rule in the state and keeping the state assembly under suspended animation.

Manipur plunged into a major political crisis when the Samata Party-led People's Front Ministry was defeated on the floor of the assembly with almost all MLAs of its ally BJP voting against him.
