Hurriyat open to fresh talks offer from Centre

In a significant development, Hurriyat Conference on Tuesday said it would give serious thought to a fresh proposal of talks on the Kashmir issue from the Centre.

"Yes, we will give serious thought to a proposal from the Centre," senior Hurriyat leader Abdul Gani Lone sain in New Delhi on Tuesday night.

The statement comes after the 23-party conglomerate began a public relation exercise in the backdrop of the Indo-Pak Agra Summit and held meetings with various intellectuals and opposition leaders in the country to share with them its perception of the situation in Jammu and Kashmir.

The Hurriyat Conference had rejected the earlier offer of talks with the Centre's emissary K C Pant and instead written to Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee for an appointment, which was rejected.

"Hurriyat Conference will positively respond to any initiative based on addressing the basic issue and will support any peace effort," former Hurriyat chairman Mirwaiz Umer Farooq said.

The Hurriyat Conference would give a serious thought if the proposal was not a repetition of the previous offer, he emphasised.
