Four held for bomb blast near Vajpayee's office

Delhi Police on Tuesday said they had arrested four activists of a Kashmiri terrorist group for a bomb attack near Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's office in May.

Detectives from the special cell swooped on the four late on Monday at Ajmeri Gate, in the heart of Delhi, and seized a large quantity of weapons and explosives, Deputy Commissioner of Police Ashok Chand said.

The four were identified as Gulzar Ahmad Wani alias Abu Hamid and Ghulam Mohiuddin Shah alias Nazir, both residents of Jammu and Kashmir.

The other two are Mumtaz Ahmad alias Maulana and Feroze Rafi, both residents of Kanpur in Uttar Prdaesh state.

Chand said the police recovered from them RDX explosives, explosive powder, a grenade-launcher, grenade shells, detonators and timer devices.

"We are questioning them to find out whether they were planning any other attack in the city," he said.

He said the four carried out two bomb attacks behind the prime minister's office and at a nearby military office on May 9. They also fired a rocket at the headquarters of the Border Security Force.

Earlier, they had also planted a bomb at a parking lot near the prime minister's office, at the Red Fort and near the India Gate monument.

No one was killed in any of these attacks, but they caused panic and embarrassed the police over lax security in supposedly VIP areas.

Chand said the four were working for Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence and were trying to create panic in the city.

"The four were based in Delhi and acted on the orders they received from ISI. Nazir has been living in New Delhi since 1995 in the disguise of a transporter," he said

PTI adds:
Metropolitan Magistrate Sanjiv Agarwal remanded Mushtaq Ahmad alias Maulana and Feroze Rafi (both residents of Kanpur) to police custody till August nine.

He, however, rejected the police plea for remand of Gulzar Ahmad Wani alias Abu Hamid and Ghulam Mohiuddin Shah alias Nazir (both residents of Jammu and Kashmir).

They were sent to judicial custody till August 13.
