Floods in Pakistan
kill 100, 69 hurt

Floods in northwestern Pakistan's Manshera district have claimed 100 lives and left 69 injured, according to an official report.

Fourteen people have been reported missing in Dhadar, Ben Dhadar, Salbandi and Bakki areas of Manshera in the North West Frontier Province, according to the provincial relief commissioner's report.

Relief and rescue operations are under way. Administrative officials have been requested to arrange private excavators from Taxila to reinforce rescue work.

International voluntary agency Red Crescent has been providing tents and blankets to the flood victims. Beds, lanterns, stoves and utensils are being arranged with the help of NGOs and the Overseas Pakistani Foundation.

Exiled former prime minister Nawaz Sharif has also allocated a huge amount for the rehabilitation of the flood affected in Dhadar and Naran from party funds, Online news agency reported.

Meanwhile, Jamaat-e-Islami chief Qazi Hussain Ahmad has asked the government to declare Rawalpindi a flood-hit area and called for a five-year exemption from taxes for those affected.
