EU earmarks 2 mn Euros for flood-hit Orissa

The 15-nation European Union has announced emergency relief of over two million Euros for the flood-stricken areas of Orissa.

The funds would cover food, temporary shelters, water and sanitation projects and medical supplies.

The EU's Humanitarian Aid Office had contacted non-governmental organisations in the affected areas and offered to support their relief efforts.

The aid is based on the funding requests received so far.

The ECHO works through some 180 NGOs, UN agencies and other international bodies around the world.

Earlier, ECHO had contributed some 13 million Euros within days of the Gujarat earthquake in January 2001.
