Manipur erupts with joy

Over 300,000 people came out on to the streets on Friday night defying curfew to celebrate the withdrawal of the Naga ceasefire from Manipur.

Reports said people in thousands also turned out in various districts to hail the amendment of the truce.

"Why have they taken so long to understand the age old blood relations between the hill and valley people?" asked a senior Naga leader from Ngariyan hill area.

"What is there to celebrate when we have lost 17 precious lives unnecessarily because of the ill-matured and wild decision of Centre and the National Socialist Council of Nagalim (Issac-Muivah)?" senior political analyst and president of the Janata Party's state unit Loitongbam Iboyaima Singh asked.

Iboyaima Singh said the centre had 'mistaken the patriotic feelings' of Manipuris to be politically motivated.

"Ours is not a demand, to protect our motherland is our birthright," he asserted.

Singh also appealed to the Centre to understand the 2000-year old history of Manipur.
