The car used by the unidentified assailants of Phoolan Devi in New Delhi on Wednesday is registered in Indore, a regional transport official said on Thursday.
"The registration number CIM 907 of the Maruti car used by the assailants was issued by the Regional Transport Authority, Indore in 1986," Indore regional transport officer Rajnish Shrivastava said.
"The colour, the model and the registration number of the car are the same as flashed on the various news channels, but the chasis number had to be matched before we could confirm it to be the same," he said.
Originally the car was registered in the name of N K Sharma, then it was sold to Harnam Singh, then to Sant Kaur and lastly in the name of Dipti Palai of Income Tax Colony, Srivastava said
He added all the previous owners are Indore residents.
However, in July 1999, Palai had obtained 'No Objection Certificate' from the Haridwar RTO and after that the whereabouts of the car were not known, Srivastava added.
Indore superintendent of police BBS Thakur said, "we have gathered all necessary information with regard to various owners of the car and if necessary then they will be questioned to nail the unidentified assailants."
