AP child adoption racket key accused
Savithriamma surrenders

Syed Amin Jafri in Hyderabad

After eluding the police for over three months, Savithriamma, promoter of an adoption home and a key accused in the child trafficking case, surrendered in the court of the 9th metropolitan magistrate in Hyderabad on Thursday.

Savithriamma carried a reward of Rs 500,000 and was evading special teams of the Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka police since April 6.

Magistrate Anand Rao remanded her to judicial custody till August 8.

The Crime Investigation Department (CID) will be filing an application seeking her remand for investigations in a day or two, a police spokesman said.

The 59-year-old Savithriamma ran the John Abraham Memorial Bethany Home at Tandur, near Hyderabad. It was in early April that the Karnataka police registered a case of forgery and cheating against Bethany Home.

On April 21, Andhra Pradesh Child Welfare Department officials raided Bethany Home and rescued 39 infants and children.

A few days later, another six children were rescued from a hideout maintained by Savithriamma in Hyderabad and six employees were arrested and remanded to judicial custody.

Subsequently, the Rangareddy police filed a criminal case against Savithriamma. The case was entrusted to the CID, even as the state government announced a reward of Rs 100,000 and later enhanced it to Rs 500,000 for clues on her whereabouts.

Savithriamma, who went into hiding, unsuccessfully moved anticipatory bail petitions in the Karnataka High Court and Andhra Pradesh High Courts even as two cases were booked against her by the Gulbarga police and the Corps of Detectives of Karnataka police for child trafficking and procurement of children from tribal areas in Karnataka.
