Indian peacekeepers not involved in Israelis' kidnapping

Rezaul H Laskar in New Delhi

The Indian Army on Wednesday dismissed reports that Indian peacekeepers stationed on the Israel-Lebanon border helped Hezbollah guerrillas kidnap three Israeli soldiers last October.

"The Israeli government has told us that our soldiers were not involved in the incident," army vice chief Lt Gen Vijay Oberoi told IANS on the sidelines of a United Nations peacekeeping seminar.

"They have informed us they have no problems with our soldiers."

Sections of the Israeli media carried reports earlier this month claiming that Indian soldiers, serving with the UN Interim Force in Lebanon, had accepted bribes from the Hezbollah and helped in the kidnapping of the Israeli soldiers on October 7 2000.
