20 million govt employees strike work

Over 20 million Central and state government employees, along with quasi-government employees, went on strike on Wednesday to protest the 'anti-workers policy followed by the government'.

For the first time, both Central and state government employees have gone on strike protesting privatisation of government schemes and fearing loss of jobs due to privatisation, representatives of major trade unions said in a statement.

However, essential services will not be affected, according to government sources.

Meanwhile, about 70,000 class I and II gazetted officers of the Maharashtra government went to work on Wednesday wearing black badges, a Gazetted Officer's Mahasangh release said.

Teachers from pre-primary to post-graduate levels will also join the countrywide strike, according to Prof Sadashivan and Dr K K Theckedath of the Teachers' Association.
