Punjab truck mishap: 17 bodies recovered

The death toll in Monday's truck mishap in Kiratpur Sahib near Ropar in Punjab has gone up to 17 with the recovery of two more bodies on Wednesday even as over 35 others were either feared drowned or missing.

The deceased were residents of Dirba village in Sangrur district and were returning from a pilgrimage when the brakes of the truck failed and the driver lost control of the vehicle.

Ropar Deputy Commissioner Gurinderjit Singh Grewal said two more bodies that of a five-year-old girl Navjeet and one Wazir Singh were fished out of the canal on Wednesday.

He said rescue work was going on round the clock and authorities had requisitioned for 10 more boats.

Fifteen bodies had been recovered till Tuesday.

The truck, which was on its way back from near by Mazar, had fallen into the Satluj-Yamuna Link canal on Monday.

Twenty people were rescued on the day of the accident.
