India rejects OIC resolution on Kashmir

India on Tuesday rejected a resolution adopted by the Organisation of Islamic Conference urging New Delhi to settle the Kashmir issue through a plebiscite.

"The OIC has no locus standi in matters concerning India's internal affairs," external affairs ministry spokeswoman Nirupama Rao told reporters. "We, therefore, reject all such resolutions."

The OIC, a grouping of 56 Islamic countries, had adopted resolutions relating to Jammu and Kashmir at its foreign ministers' meeting at Bamako in Mali June 25-27.

The resolution said, "The conference reiterated its support for the self-determination of the people of Jammu and Kashmir on the basis of relevant United Nations resolutions, denouncing the blatant violations of human rights in Kashmir and calling on member states to take all necessary measures to convince India to put an immediate end to these violations."

The resolution was part of the final declaration issued by the OIC at the end of the meeting.

The All-Parties Hurriyet Conferenec, a conglomerate of 23 separatist Kashmiri groups, has observer status with the OIC.

Senior Hurriyet leader Mirwaiz Omar Farooq attended the Bamako meet to brief Pakistan Foreign Minister Abdul Sattar on the Kashmir issue ahead of the Agra summit between Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf.

The OIC meeting also adopted resolutions on the situations in Afghanistan and Palestine.

India has persistently rejected any OIC move to intervene in the Kashmir issue.
