Massive explosion rocks Srinagar, 9 injured

A powerful bomb explosion rocked Khanyar locality in down town Srinagar on Monday morning injuring to nine persons, including five members of the paramilitary Border Security Force.

Meanwhile police recovered bodies of four Village Defence Committee members on Monday from jungles of Chatroo in Kishtwar area of Doda district.

The fate of the fifth VDC member is still not known. Five members of the VDC were abducted on Saturday evening from near Chatroo.

With the recovery of the bodies the authorities imposed a curfew in Kishtwar.

Meanwhile, Union Minister of State for Home I D Swami and the special secretary home A A Bhandari are visiting Chirjee near Kishtawar in Doda district where 15 Hindu villagers were gunned down by unidentified militants early on Sunday.

He will be accompanied by top state officials. The minister will have detailed discussions with the state authorities and review security arrangements in the state for minority community members living in far-flung areas of Doda.

Sources said that fearing trouble the administration imposed curfew in Kishtwar town and put the police and security forces on high alert. High tension has gripped Jammu and adjoining areas following the killing of Hindu villagers. Shopkeepers downed their shutters in Jammu on Monday morning.

No group has yet owned responsibility for the killings. Senior police and security force officers have already the village and a combing operation has been mounted in the area.

Police said a Border Security Force vehicle was extensively damaged in a powerful mine blast early this morning in Khanyar locality.

Sources said an improvised explosive device planted by militants on the Khanyar road exploded when BSF vehicles were on move in the area. Five BSF members who received serious injuries in the blast were shifted to Soura medical institute for treatment.

Four civilian bystanders who were also wounded have been admitted in SMHS hospital. Senior BSF officers rushed to the spot immediately and the area was cordoned off. Searches were also mounted in the area.
