Both Houses adjourned for the day in memory of King Birendra

The monsoon session of Parliament began on a sombre note on Monday with both Houses adjourning for the day without transacting any business in memory of Nepal's King Birendra and Queen Aishwarya who were assassinated on June 1.

In an obituary reference, Lok Sabha Speaker G M C Balayogi said King Birendra was a visionary who would be remembered by future generations for ushering peaceful political changes and multi-party democracy in Nepal.

"This House recalls with deep appreciation the invaluable role played by him in strengthening relations with India and in building regional cooperation," he said.

The Lok Sabha also condoled the passing away of a sitting Bharatiya Janata Party member, Shyam Lal Bansiwal, and nine other former members -- Z M Kahaandole, Amrit Nahata, N Tombi Singh, Sudhakar Naik, G Y Krishnan, Ram Dhan, P Ramachandran, Jagannath Kaushal and C R Pattabhi Raman.

In the Rajya Sabha, Chairman Krishan Kant said the people of India would cherish the memory of King Birendra's friendship. The House also condoled the demise of R K Narayan, G Y Krishnan, Jagannath Kaushal, Mohammad Yunus, Niresh Ghosh and matinee idol Sivaji Ganesan, all former members.

Paying tributes to Ganesan, Chairman Krishan Kant said the country had lost an eminent cine personality.

The House also condemned the barbaric killing of 13 people, including six pilgrims, during this year's Amarnath yatra at Sheshnag in Doda district on Saturday.
