Shibu Soren loses Rajya Sabha membership

The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, Soren, suffered a major blow on Thursday with the Supreme Court setting aside party president Shibu Soren's election to the Rajya Sabha.

A three-judge bench comprising Chief Justice A S Anand, Justice R C Lahoti and Justice Shivaraj V Patil upheld the Patna high court order, which had cancelled Soren's election.

The high court had held that Soren was holding an office of profit under the state government as chairman of the Interim Jharkhand Area Autonomous Council, and hence disqualified from contesting the election under Article 102(1)(a) of the Constitution.

The court had declared Dayanand Sahay elected in his place.
