APJSM to launch movement for creating Jammu state

All Parties Jammu Statehood Movement, a conglomerate of 17 political, social and cultural organisations, on Thursday decided to launch a vigorous movement for a separate statehood of Jammu.

The movement will begin by taking a pledge on Independence Day, August 15th, with the sole objective of creating a Jammu state, the leaders of APJSM told reporters at a joint press conference.

Various other activities, including public meetings, rallies and holding of processions will be undertaken later to mobilise the supporters of Jammu statehood, APJSM co-ordinator Yash Bhasin said.

Justifying the need for separate Jammu state, Bhasin said the people of Jammu and Ladakh regions had been discriminated by Kashmiri rulers for over five decades in matters of services, admissions to professional colleges and the like.

Another APJSM leader Verinder Gupta said the central government should take immediate steps to de-link Jammu and Ladakh regions from Kashmir in order to save them from the Kashmiri secessionist movement and localise the unrest in the valley

The leaders said a three-member committee had been constituted to prepare a blueprint draft of the proposed Jammu state, which would spell out the devolution of powers to districts, mandals and panchayats and the safeguards to be provided to sub-regions and various socio-cultural and linguistic communities.
