Bombay blasts trial concludes after six years

With a special court recording the statements of 124 accused, including film star Sanjay Dutt, the marathon bomb blasts trial has concluded after six years.

On the concluding day on Wednesday, the ailing parents of absconding accused Yakub 'Tiger' Memon deposed before the designated judge, P D Kode.

Abdul Razak and his wife Hanifa, on interim bail, came to the Terrorist And Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act court on wheelchairs to give their statements.

The trial is a grim reminder of the serial explosions that rocked the metropolis on March 12, 1993, killing 257 people and maiming 713 others, besides damaging property worth Rs 300 million.

A record number of 13,000 pages have been recorded as evidence by the 684 witnesses examined by the Central Bureau of Investigation. Altogether, 38,070 questions were put to the accused to record their statements.

In all, 124 accused are facing trial, which commenced on June 30, 1995. Thirty-one accused are in custody while the rest, including Sanjay Dutt, are on bail.

Abu Asim Azmi and Amjad Mehr Baksh were discharged by the Supreme Court, while co-accused Riaz Khatri jumped bail. Two others, Hamid Dafedar and Harba Hari Khopatkar, have died.

Seven accused -- Salim Kurla, Majeed Khan, Shakil Ahmed, Mohammed Jindran, Hanif Kadawala, Akbar Abu Sama Khan and Mohammed Jabir Abdul Latif -- were killed either by rival gangsters or in police encounters.
