No increase in Amarnath pilgrims: J&K govt

The Jammu and Kashmir government on Thursday told the Delhi High Court that it cannot permit more than 3,500 Amarnath pilgrims beyond Jammu every day on account of security reasons and bad weather.

It placed before the court a communication between J&K tourism secretary and the tourism director to that effect.

According to the communication, a major cloudburst had taken place near Nunwanan late on July 16 posing a threat to proper arrangements.

It said that Nunwanan is flooded with water due to the cloudburst.

On permitting only 105000 pilgrims this year as compared to 173000 in the year 2000, the government said that last year the weather was normal, while this time there was an early snowfall.

The government counsel also said that in view of the militant attacks on Amarnath camp last year, the state government had imposed certain restrictions this time.

The court has adjourned the hearing to August 16.
